چکیده

We examined assortative mating behavior in 149 pairs of Merlins (Falco columbarius) breeding in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada from 1985 through 1990. Yearlings paired with yearlings and adults (2-plus years old) paired with adults more frequently than expected. Among adult pairs, however, there was no significant assortment by age. The productivity of pairs which included a yearling member was significantly lower than that of pairs with two adult birds. Similarly, pairs with two adults hatched their young on average nine days earlier than pairs with at least one yearling. There was no significant assortment of pairs based on body size with the exception of tail length. Along with differences in the timing of breeding activities, one other possible proximate mechanism promoting the distinction between adults and yearlings when choosing a mate was the difference in plumage between adult and yearling males.

Temporal migration patterns and mating tactics influence size-assortative mating in Rana temporaria

Assortative mating is a common pattern in sexually reproducing species, but the mechanisms leading to assortment remain poorly understood. By using the European common frog (Rana temporaria) as a model, we aim to understand the mechanisms leading to size-assortative mating in amphibians. With data from natural populations collected over several years, we first show a consistent pattern of size-...

Strong assortative mating by diet, color, size, and morphology but limited progress toward sympatric speciation in a classic example: Cameroon crater lake cichlids.

Models predict that sympatric speciation depends on restrictive parameter ranges, such as sufficiently strong disruptive selection and assortative mating, but compelling examples in nature have rarely been used to test these predictions. I measured the strength of assortative mating within a species complex of Tilapia in Lake Ejagham, Cameroon, a celebrated example of incipient sympatric adapti...

Cattle and Sheep Growth USING ASSORTATIVE MATINGS TO MAXIMISE SALES OF HOMOZYGOUS FAVOURABLE SHEEP SIRES, A SIMULATION STUDY

A stochastic simulation model of a sheep breeding program is used to show how assortative matings can increase the number of rams sold which are homozygous favourable for a major gene. The commercial implications of such a strategy are discussed in comparison with strategies focused more on increasing gene frequency. Long term inbreeding is unaffected while the lost response to selection for po...
